The all-knowing DH music meme [23 Jul 2007|08:28pm]
All-knowing music-playing device meme, gacked from [info]florahart who gacked from [info]bethbethbeth

Rules: Go to the music player of your choice and put it on shuffle. Say the following questions aloud and press play. Use the song titles and/or one to two lines from the song as your answers.

The questions are all HP (and HP:DH) related.

Stop! Wibble time [22 Jul 2007|07:19pm]
While I'm not going to specifically address the actual contents of Deathly Hallows in this, you're forewarned that I can't guarantee the comments won't end up in spoiler territory or that my discussion won't inadvertently hint things. If you haven't read it, you might not want to read this. I'm discussing my life more than I'm discussing specific aspects of HP, so read if you're into the personal stuff but it's not so much about the reaction stuff.

Anyway.

I know that many of you started Harry Potter in early adolescence and basically grew up with Harry. [info]doubtful_salmon wrote a beautiful post about how Harry and co. are very real to us. I came into HP at a later time of life, so it's had a different significance for me, and I'll try to put that into words because I feel a need to. So, here I go trying.

FYI since I haven't made it clear:

I am avoiding reading articles and things prior to DH because of potential spoilers contained in them. Obviously there is some level of spoilering in things like cover art of the books (can't exactly avoid looking at the cover of a book when you're going to get it) but I'm very deliberately trying to avoid foreknowledge of anything I can avoid. So please, even if something is "widely known," don't assume I know it since I'm trying hard to be as unspoiled as possible without retreating into rarely speaking to (well, chatting with) people. I'm trying to be more communicative and having it backfire on me makes it harder.

Q [09 Jul 2007|04:56pm]
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favourite lyric to your current favourite song. Or your favourite kind of sandwich. Something random. Whatever you like.

2. I respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.

3. You WILL update your LJ with the answers to the questions.

4. You will include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.

5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.

Questions asked by [info]shaggydogstail

1. What is your #1 fandom?

I'd have to say Harry Potter because that's what I'm most involved in lurker-wise, plus extensive RPGing. I'm minimally involved in other fandoms (a little reading and icon-making and that's about it,) so by default, gotta be HP. In the past, my #1 would've been Sailor Moon.

2. Can you juggle? Do magic tricks? Throw your voice? Or anything like that?

Oh, just make me feel untalented! ;D I haven't even tried to juggle since elementary school P.E.! Anyway, no, I can't do any neat stuff of that sort. But I have a crooked left arm from having a bone set wrong, so I can at least gross squeamish people out with that.

3. Why Rita?

Hmmm! Well, I play her in another game and was already comfortable with the character, and when I looked at who was already taken in [info]hex_files (and thus who was open) it pinged on me that I ought to apply as Rita. I think I'm drawn to her because of our differences. She's got a self-interested attitude, doesn't apologize for how she treats people-- and poorly treats them, too-- and she's the kind of writer I don't want to be. But since she IS a fellow writer, I get to write a lot while having it be in-character to do so. She's a strangely good fit for me, I think!

4. What is your favourite drink?

Alcohol-wise, a very weak pina colada and even then I'll go virgin to keep from getting buzzed. But I can't live without hot tea. Madagascar vanilla, cream and sugar. And Barnie's White Christmas (coconut and cinnamon).

5. Tell us a joke.

Crap. A joke? I'm not good at forming jokes. I can try.

Q. What should a cool frood like you do if you lose your towel?
A. Don't panic.

*cringes, apologizes*

Rita Skeeter Masterlist of Writing [30 Jun 2007|02:14am]
After taking on a second Rita roleplaying journal I realized-- damn, it's about time I hunted down more Rita fanworks! I've seen fanart and read the occasional essay that briefly mentioned her, but never really read Rita fics. [info]gelise said she also loves Rita but didn't really have anything to rec. So I went hunting, and was fruitful. I like delicious things. Hence, a masterlist of written works where Rita stars, solo or in a pairing. A few feature her less prominently, but it's difficult to find her even in a smaller role.

I located them through sources such as [info]ritaskeeter_, [info]quibbler_report, and [info]featherxquill's Rita Skeeter Masterlist (fic/art masterlist pre-2007). I'm hoping to catch as much Rita writing as I can that's been scattered through journals and communities, and to put it in one easy reference. Because different people have different tastes, I've included whatever I've found regardless of personal enjoyment in case someone else might like it. So, these don't necessarily constitute recommendations. Read for yourself! ;)

Please note that I've listed the ratings and pairings for the fics but have listed warnings; authors list those on the fics themselves. You can assume that if the pairing involves Rita and a Trio-era student, it's a cross-gen fic and likely involves an underage partner. I've also listed the community posted at, when applicable, in case you've already read everything from that community. Currently this list doesn't contain any off-LJ links except to all-too-rare essays, but you can find recs for other sites on the aforementioned fic/art masterlist. I'm also not listing stories that are firmly grounded in an RPG's context because they're meant for the RPG readership.

The fic listings sometimes include both part one/two, original/sequel, or multiple drabbles, so the count is based on listings rather than individual fics represented. I intend to add more listings as I discover them and as new ones are released.

Fic listings as of:
June 29: 68
July 01: 71
July 09: 72
July 10: 73

I'm a complete dork who just went wild that I got "Outstanding" on the 3rd WOMBAT test.

... *hangs head in shame at dorky glee*

In related dorky news, my parents are going up to Georgia to see Mom's folks for her birthday next month, but I won't be going because they rescheduled the trip for the weekend Deathly Hollows comes out. Nuuuuuu. Already planned months ago. Not passing up reading that right away for a five hour car ride (each way) and sitting around in sleepy south Georgia.

Progress still slow on collaborating with Dad to write these books. He's finally realized he needs to commit to outlining an hour a day (at least) because without the outline, I don't know where the plot is going, and thus can't write it as effectively. We had a fun talk yesterday about what we feel our writing strengths/weaknesses are. He says he has no problem coming up with the story and structure but can't write dialogue at all; I feel very comfortable with multiple characters voices but I'm not confident about plotting, second-guess it too much and it turns out weak because I'm not sure what to do. Sooo, with him developing the underlying structure and where it's going, and me doing the actual writing of it... Now he just needs to have the time available to commit to that outlining. Maybe as Mom said, "He should do it when I'm getting ready for bed!" *takes forever to wash face*

[13 Jun 2007|05:54pm]
I'm going to be in Indianapolis Friday - Sunday for this year's Formula 1 USGP, and I can find no clear information on whether or not the Speedway has actually gone non-smoking. The city has, but the Speedway is not considered in the city but rather in the city of Speedway which is surrounded BY the city of Indianapolis. So I try to find information on the city regs, and I only find articles from 2006 about them possibly adding the track to the coverage but no information about the actual decision. So I then try the track website, and it has no information whatsoever about whether smoking is still allowed or not, despite an extensive list of other regulations there.

I don't want to end up on a damned oxygen mask again from all the cigarette smoke, and that was even after massive inhaler usage. So, I need a fresh inhaler just in case there's smoking and just in case my old inhaler is pretty useless.

But the allergy/asthma people won't give me a new prescription without a new checkup again, haven't done one in 2 years, so I have to rush in tomorrow, get checked out, rush to the pharmacy, hope they can fill it before closing, and if not, hope I have time Friday to get it.

I should have taken care of this earlier but this trip was a pretty last-minute thing and I didn't think to get the new inhaler because I've been trying NOT to stress out, which of course means now I have to massively stress out, and I'm going to go have another teary now.

With my nice barely-lubricating eyes, that is, and tears don't help with dry eyes so how useless is that?

From Wiki: "Dry eyes also occurs or gets worse after LASIK and other refractive surgeries, in which the corneal nerves are cut during the creation of a corneal flap.[5] The corneal nerves stimulate tear secretion.[5] Dry eyes caused by these procedures usually resolves after several months.[6] Persons who are thinking about refractive surgery should consider this.[5]"

YEP. THAT'S ME, SLICED-CORNEAL-NERVE-TEARY-INHALER-SEEKER.

And this'll probably cost plenty because insurance still hasn't settled out what the hell the acupuncturist tried to pull with those extra charges, what they'll cover for that, what my coverage will now be since I'm graduated, etc.

OH HAPPY DAY.

ETA: I found notice of a Speedway ordinance but I fail at legalese. It seems to suggest that smoking is now banned everywhere BUT the grandstands, though I'm not sure. If you can interpret these things, please see here for the Motor Speedway stuff:

(a) The following areas shall be excepted from the provisions of Sections 6.05.030 through 6.05.050 to the extent those Sections would otherwise be applicable:
"(8) Unenclosed areas located at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, including without limitation all grandstands and other outdoor seating areas."

Right, because there's nothing unhealthy about smoke blowing in your face as long as you're outdoors. Not like you'd need medical attention and oxygen treatment for it. OH WAIT.

ETA2: As a further remark because I feel like it, when I said I'd go to the race, it was with the understanding that it'd be if we could get enclosed seats thanks to a friend/neighbor who works at Brighthouse and has the connections for that. I didn't say "Yay let's go!" thinking I'd end up in outdoor smoky seating again. If I'd known that, oh how I would've passed.

Book list [06 Jun 2007|02:37am]
Finally LJ is working for me. I actually wrote the following post a few days ago:

My god, college really turned me into such a book hoarder. I have so many books lying around (well, shelved) waiting for me to finally read them, and I just keep on accumulating. So, I decided to make a list for myself, and then put it here in case anyone wants to urge me to hurry up and read a particular one.

Most of these were either purchased by me or for me off a wishlist; got a thoughtful present in one instance, and a few campus booksales and coursebooks mixed in. I've noted the ones I didn't specifically buy/request myself since I find I approach assigned or gifted books differently from ones I select.

Finally got Dad to both take and upload pictures of Crookshanks. View the Crookshanks gallery now! The power of cuteness compels you!

This LJ status is so what I've been experiencing no matter what journal I use: "We've been dealing with an increased amount of malicious traffic recently. In order to ensure LiveJournal's overall availability, we've take a couple of measures to minimize the impact of this traffic. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of preventing some users from posting long entries or comments. We're working on resolving this problem as soon as we can, and we apologize for the frustration it's causing."

Attempting a brief post (over an hour to go through). I did a little drawing for the latest Summary Executions.

Crookshanks got his snip-snip yesterday and we wanted to keep him inside for recuperating, so he slept in my room. Slept is probably the wrong word. While I read magazines in bed ("Wizard" and "Bitch") he curled up against my leg and looked completely adorable. When I had to sleep, though... every few hours, he'd start meowing and yowling for no apparent reason. I'd manage to groan out a "Cwooookshaaanks" to reassure him and then pass out again to the sound of his meowing.

He is sleeping downstairs tonight.

Just in case, I finally remembered my password over at greatestjournal. At the very least, I can check up on friends there. As usual, I'm immora over there. Hell, that's what I use most everywhere, except that a camwhore also uses it (ex. on deviantart) so not EVERYWHERE, alas.

Anyway.

KITTY IS NAMED!

KITTY IS NAMED CROOKSHANKS!

[info]kimby77 suggested it to me and I suggested it to Mom and she liked it, and then my dad independently arrived at the same name (much like we did with Arwen) so it's official! He's still sosocuteyesheis. Pictures will come as soon as Dad gets back from a trip and drags out the digicam.

Shadow is still very pissed off about all of this. I carried him onto the porch again today and he cussed some more, but he lasted a little longer. He and Crookshanks keep eyeing each other through the porch door. Meanwhile, Arwen believes she's some kind of kitty-dog and doesn't have an issue, except it alarms her when Crookshanks meows.

On a more positive note, I'm not the only one on my flist to recently have cat news.

The day I graduated, I met a small orange tabby thanks to my dog barking her head off during her evening walk. Said tabby was understandably not interested in being petted by someone who brought barking to it. I hoped kitty would be all right.

Some days later, our neighbors had found the cat-- discovered it is, uh, VERY OBVIOUSLY MALE, and were giving him food and water but not adopting it because "oh we have two cats and dogs already, we don't need another." So, cat basically had an unreliably source of food and water but no home, and continued having to roam the neighborhood. Mom and I kept hoping that family would finally take him in, or another neighbor with a cat-loving daughter would.

Weeks after that, cat still doesn't have a home.

I woke up this morning (well, 2 pm) and went downstairs. Mom pointed to the door to our back porch, where she had a sign that said "DO NOT LET SHADOW OUT." And she emphasized that. I assumed she must've bleached the back porch and thus didn't want our cat getting bleachy paws. Look out on back porch, and there's the orange tabby, looking very contentedly curled up for an afternoon nap. So much for "Shadow wants to be an only cat!" We can't ignore a stray like that. Mom found him several houses away, panting. Carried him home, got him settled in on the back porch, etc. We've made the vet arrangements for shots and neutering.

Dad, meanwhile, is quite bewildered and doesn't know what just happened. He should be used to Mom surprising him with pets by now! But to aid with their bonding, we told him he should name the cat since he always names our pets. With LotR names. Not sure what name he'll come up with for a male orange tabby, but we'll see.

Cat's "packing heat" so we're keeping him and Shadow separated until they get used to peering at each other through the door, getting orange kitty neutered, etc.-- Shadow has no front claws so he can't effectively defend himself against a clawed kitty, as he learned when he kept teasing our old cat and earned a pop on the nose that's left a scar to this day. Curiously, orange kitty has the same scar. Despite his claws, he is excellent at not extending them when picked up, when wanting to be put down, when held, and he has the cutest pink pads and nose and ears.

Kitty is ohsocuteIwubhimalready.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled LJ freakouts. I've already wiped interests for the time being in case the searches extend to anything I'd listed, backed up this and other journals/communities, and otherwise had my bout of paranoia.

Name suggestions for a sweet, male orange tabby in case Dad can't/won't think of one? Mom and I already eliminated the Weasley names because none of them felt right. We're big fans of literary or other media source names. We've had Frodo, Gimli, Pippin, and now Arwen for cats and dogs, and various fish names from racing, Star Wars, and comics.

Is She or Isn't She?
How Elizabeth Swann Is And Isn't A Feminist

(A Drafty Thing I May Expand Someday)

"Saying a character is decidedly feminist usually gets you shot down. How was Elizabeth Swann feminist? (If you answer that she wasn't, I will either ignore you, or, alternately, punch you.)" — [info]doubtful_salmon, "Questions for Yo-Ho-ing"

"But she is. If you say that she isn't I'll punch you, as I said I would." — [info]doubtful_salmon, hearing I might write this

Thanks to various influences like my almost-minor in Women's Studies (one course shy), Bitch Magazine, and the book Action Chicks: New Images of Tough Women in Popular Culture, I've become more interested in looking at just how "tough women" are characterized in pop sources like books, comics, and movies. And I kind of love Pirates of the Caribbean, so it makes sense to look at the latest movie and its portrayal of Elizabeth Swann.

At the risk of being punched for the second portion of this post, I'm going to try to outline some arguments both for and against the movie setting up Elizabeth as a "feminist" character. And I'm going to argue with myself along the way!

ETA: The purpose of this consider and confront possible arguments for/against Elizabeth as a (not?) feminist, rather than me setting out an argument for Elizabeth being one or not. I want to draw on the types of critiques I've seen and see how Elizabeth might be interpreted through them, not set out to argue for or against a position. I should probably offer my personal interpretation to clarify my own views of her. WHOOPS.

On a random note, my cousin Brooke has a long-time correspondence with Dick Clark and occasionally gets to visit him and his wife out in California. He was a long-time fan mailer and always got friendly responses, met Mr. Clark during a taping down here in Orlando, and has been keeping in touch since. Brooke is mildly autistic and learning disabled, and Mr. Clark has been awesome to him. Our uncle also had a stroke, so between that and Dick Clark having one, we've become pretty concerned with stroke awareness. That's background for an e-mail from my aunt today:

"They did go visit Dick Clark the next day. Brooke says that he is not looking as well as he did last year when we saw him. Brooke's description was that he looked "brittle". Really hated to hear that as I was hoping for him to become good as new."

Acupuncture update copy-pasted from IMs with [info]kenboy:

(6:49:10 PM) Sorry, having a rough week so I'm freaking out over this

(6:50:22 PM) My insurance hasn't been covering my acupuncture, so the office keeps reminding me to contact insurance and find out what's up

(6:50:42 PM) I can't do that myself, don't know the details since it's under Dad's plan (until they notice i've graduated) so he had to finally contact them himself
(6:50:49 PM) Been on business trips and stuff so it took awhile
(6:51:03 PM) Found out day before my appointment that, oh yeah, insurance is still "researching" if they're going to cover me or not
(6:51:13 PM) In the meantime, I'm racking up charges for treatments I haven't received
(6:51:30 PM) Like, "physical therapy," presumably some knee treatment I only had a few times yet getting billed for every week
(6:51:49 PM) So I could end up slammed with charges that insurance decides not to cover after all, about 400 a visit, when I had no clue they were charging that much
(6:51:56 PM) or charging for additional not-actually-received things
(6:52:16 PM) So now I can't get treatment any more
(6:52:47 PM) And it's probably going to cost a frickin' lot, which my parents said they'll cover but either way, I can't continue treatment unless insurance comes through and says they actually will continue coverage

(6:54:09 PM) I was getting treated for my Tourette's but it was helping with anxiety, so I stopped taking my anxiety meds...

(6:54:25 PM) So now I got slammed with major stress without acupuncture or meds to help handle the anxiety dump

(6:54:36 PM) Not a good mental health week!
(6:54:40 PM) *flails*

And now, a breakdown of my pull list at the comic book store, compiled for my darling [info]serafer (*sniffles for you*)

Been taking an extended LJ break for the first time since I've started using it, so it's been overdue! Plus it's helped me concentrate on other stuff. So, here's the basic highlights from March onward to get caught up. I'm not going to go back through weeks of community posts and things, but I'll try to hit my flist more and catch up on reading certain people.

Put up my 10th anniversary thing for my website, so if you were interested in that old stuff, it's up now.

Been playing a lot of Guild Wars in my spare time. I joined a different guild and it didn't work out, so I broke off with most of my friends from the guild and started a new one. We're called Snuggle Bunnies [Paws]. This name is love. Discovered two of my beloved guildies are also old-time Sailor Moon fans. This, too, is love.

I had a LASIK consultation and I'm a good candidate. I'll be getting LASIK next Friday (April 27th). If all goes well, I should finally be glasses-free. If it's slightly-less-well, I should only need glasses part-time, not for every little thing. Looking forward to this!

Back in March, I had a horrible trip to my neurologist. He's basically uninterested in listening to patient concerns and answering questions, so when I told him how the Seroquel was giving me little relief but dangerous side effects like being super-tired while driving, his response was to tell me to increase the dose. Yeah.

So I've now been receiving acupuncture as treatment, even though I was pretty scared of even trying that, and... it's frickin' amazing. Tic severity way down, tic frequency way down, have more energy since I'm weaning off the Seroquel, less compulsive... I'm very happy with it. Verrrry happy with it.

And on a last note, I'll turn in my final revision assignment next Tuesday (24th) and after that, it's the LASIK and then graduation on May 4th. I'm graduating Summa Cum Laude.

Back to working on that revision assignment.

DEG at the HOB! [03 Feb 2007|12:15am]
Ohhhh myyyyyy gooooooood. I've been wanting to see Dir en grey for five years and they were so, SO PERFECT. I AM SO HAPPY!!!

Hammering off thoughts before I collapse to sleep!

The venue worked out all right. If I'd gotten there a bit earlier, I might've got a better spot, but at least I got to sit through the first semi-decent warm-up and the second crappy warm-up, and then I had a good lean for watching DIIIIRUUUUUUU. Not a great view of Kaoru or Toshiya (hardly recognizable with all that hair) from there but FANTASTIC view of Shinya, Die, and Kyo. And since I was utterly transfixed by Kyo and barely took my eyes off him, that worked out great. I'm surprised I still have a voice from all my screaming, and no headache! But hydrating all day and taking aspirin beforehand might've helped keep me from getting any dehydration-like headache.

Or headbanger headache and neck. Um. I kind of let down my hair and went a bit nuts by my standards because I was so into it :D;;;;

They played mostly hard songs, can't name them all because I'm so AAAHHHH! Actually not that much new-new stuff (only a couple I didn't recognize) because they mostly played Withering to Death, along with some old goodies like-- man I screamed-- Byo Shin, eeee! EEEEEE! And they played The Final! Did I mention I did lots of screaming and headbanging? As did the moshing, crowd-surfing, undergarment-throwing audience? (I saw quite a few women/teen girls having to be lifted out of the crowd by security, not sure if they were getting crushed or fainting or what.)

Also: KYO WORE THE BUCKET. I didn't recognize the word on it and could only read a few letters of it, but HE WORE THE ICEWATER BUCKET ON HIS HEAD, WITH LOVE. AND KICKED OVER HIS BOX/CRATE HE STANDS ON. AND DIE WAS ALL ACTING LIKE "YEEEEEAAAAAH, CHEER FOR ME, BIYOTCHES, COME ON!" AND HAD A SHIRT THAT SAID SOMETHING LIKE "FUCK YOUR DEAD BODIES." "BRING YOUR FUCKING DEAD." HELP ME, I'M STUCK IN GLEEFUL CAPSLOCK MODE!

[ETA: Apparently, the bucket said "RAPE ME" on it. I think some were ready to oblige @_@ And I forget what people are saying Die's shirt said, but whatever, he was so cool!]

Kyo is so freaking amazing. I don't know how in the world he kept up screaming and running around and doing all these intense faces and everything. He even toyed with the boy-loving audience members by tugging his pants down a bit, as well as quite deliberately bending over to display his rear as he rubbed it. Talk about fan service. @_@;;; Worked on the tipsy girl next to me, though, who kept screaming "THAT'S HOT!" for awhile after those antics. And the poor dear cracked his falsetto on one of the high notes, but no problem getting out all the screaming and typical Kyo wildness. <3

[ ETA 2: I thought I'd be grossed out by the fishhooking and chest-scratching because I was majorly queasy when I saw FVT pictures of it, so I surprised myself by screaming like a maniac when he did it. Caught up in the mood, wot wot! And he did his thing where he slams the mic against his chest, and this wild crying/screaming thing that first sounded way naughty and then turned crazed. KYO IS LOVE. ]

And Shinya's puny arms must come from another planet to play like that, because his arms can't be much bigger than mine and he was insane as well. Daaaaamn. Big new respect for Shinya and his awesome-yet-puny arms!

They through out a few zillion water bottles (with obligatory audience-spraying beforehand) and Die tossed lots of picks, got them quite far but not up to the second level where I was. Impressive pick tossing technique, like he was skipping stones.

Which, by the way, he probably could do well because HE'S ALSO SO AWESOME.

If you like DEG at all and you have the chance (and no history of seizures because there's a lot of strobing,) SEE THEM. PLEASE TRUST ME. OH MY GOD.

Heck, I don't know if I'll really sleep all that well since I'm so buzzed from it!

[ ETA 3: Geeeeez my neck is sore today! I'm popping aspirins, taking a hot bath, trying to be gentle with it. Headbanging IS dangerous. But so good. I forgot to add, they didn't take the stage until nearly two hours after the "start" of the event, and they played for around an hour and a half (not including the brief break before the encore). It didn't feel like that at all, though, felt like they were there for a beautiful age because they just played and played and god they played. Can't wait to see them again someday. ]

Help me. I'm fast becoming addicted to the Fan Fiction History Wiki (I even tried to do that link as [ ] style) and I don't know when I'll break away. I guess when I exhaust my ability to remember or track down tidbits from my old fandoms. Currently going nuts all over the Sailor Moon article, and I hope to see more action on the Nocturne Alley one as well. [info]qwirky, what name do you prefer to associate with TSSP these days? I put Robin because that's what's in the disclaimer. Wiki is a good break from making my head explode on The History of Sexuality.

So my dad finally got back in town after two weeks away with only a day here in-between-- I'M SO SORRY [info]faerie_speak HE WAS SURPRISE HERE ON THE DAY OF YOUR PARTY! :( He left on Sunday for London, and a few hours after he left, our family room TV decided to die. It was on and tuned to a recorded "Wife Swap" episode (... what? don't look at me like that) and I walked away to help Mom finish making tea. We went back, and the TV picture was gone. No worky. Bye bye. One month after the extended warranty expired. And we can't get someone out to fix it until FEBRUARY SIXTH because the SUPER BOWL has all the local TV owners scrambling to get last minute tune-ups "just in case" so they won't miss the game.

Two more weeks until more Battlestar Galactica?! DOUBLY CURSE YOU, SUPERBOOOOOOOOOWL! (Ken, you know I'll want to discuss when you're around.)

But oh my god, Friday is Dir en grey, so I can forgive BSG being gone and the TV being stupid since I've got my DEG coming up.

Heck yeah.

Also: my newscaster neighbor says that Jon Stewart is a great guy, and indeed funny. He interviewed Jon Stewart one morning because Jon Stewart (I always say his full name) had just got a book out, and Martha Stewart's along backstage and is all "Oh, I'd like to meet him!" not knowing that the other Stewart had written a whole chapter blasting her. I'm one step away from Jon Stewart, wheeee ♥

Sleep time is now.

Gender gender gender! [10 Jan 2007|11:54pm]
Tomorrow, I get my hair trimmed up from its current too-tangly length (just a smidge past the bottom of my bra band) and recolored to something that'll show less roots in the long gaps between my showing up for appointments. Probably go back to my natural, unhighlighted dark blonde for the first time in a decade. Should be interesting! Fabulous gay hairdresser whose partner is a VP for Victoria's Secret, who I could never have cut my hair before because I'd been using a different stylist and she'd have been ultra-vindicative if I switched to someone else. Thankfully, she's gone off to another salon, so I'm safe to use him. Good thing, too, since my current gay hairdresser is moving to D.C. and I need a new one :(

Just finished watching A Few Good Men for the first time, and I'm impressed with the dialogue and acting but not so impressed with the sexist and homophobic (under?)tones that go unquestioned. Actors' names since I don't remember the character names well-- Why are Demi Moore's opinions only the right opinions once Tom Cruise agrees with her? Why is it all right for Jack to totally insult another officer with blatantly sexual and sexist remarks that reduce her and other women of rank to fetish objects, but if you dare to question him in a court of law (about something unrelated to the sexism), you're likely to get court-martialed yourself for even suggesting he'd done wrong? Guess it's really a reflection of how this ultramachismo operates in the military, which is troubling.

Real reason for posting is because of my Sexuality, Gender, and Philosophy class. I'm in the middle of Michel Foucault's The History of Sexuality: An Introduction, and I just came across something that very much reminds me of the current state of American sex ed and other scientific knowledge:

"It is as if a fundamental resistance blocked the development of a rationally formed discourse concerning human sex, its correllations, and its effects. A disparity of this sort would indicate that the aim of such a discourse was not to state the truth but to prevent its very emergence. Underlying the difference between the physiology of reproduction and the medical theories of sexuality, we would have to see something other and something more than an uneven scientific development or a disparity in the forms of rationality; the one would partake of that immense will to knowledge which has sustained the establishment of scientific discourse in the West, whereas the other would derive from a stubborn will to nonknowledge." (p 55, emphases mine)

Want to give me some thoughts on gender, or pass someone else's on to me? Here's my assignment as far as what LJ friends might be able to contribute. If you can contribute thoughts to one of these, no need to answer again for another.

1. Ask two of your friends what they think a real man is. Then ask them what they think a real woman is. Make notes of their answers, paying close attention to their words they use to describe real men and real women. (First come first served! Thankies, duckies.)

3. If you have children, ask them the same question. If you don't have children, ask someone who is close to you who would be of that generation. Make notes of their answers, paying close attention to the words they use to describe real men and real women. (LOOKING AT YOU, [info]kenboy's NATE. Or anyone else here with children who can formulate sentences/responses about this.)

4. Ask two people of a different race than you those questions. Make notes of their answers, paying close attention to the words they use to describe real men and real women. (This question makes me wrinkle my nose because of the vagueness of "race" as a concept, but I'm sure this instructor is aware of that. So, for the record, I guess that means someone non-white since I'm white. AHEM [info]qwirky AND [info]duchessingmar FOR INSTANCE)

5. Ask two peoples of a different culture than you those questions. Make notes of their answers, paying close attention to the words they use to describe real men and real women. (So, a non-United States folk. LOOKING AT YOU, [info]vikingcarrot and [info]shirosenshi, CANADIANS AND EUROPEANS OF VARIOUS SORTS.)
